Johanna „Jopie” Boeke (született Baarslag) 2026. június 28-án, 88 éves korában elhunyt.
1937. november 15-én született a hollandiai Assen városában. Amerikai férjével, a néhai Richard F. Boeke tiszteletessel, akivel hatvan éven át éltek házasságban, egy hágai konferencián ismerkedett meg. 1965-ben kötöttek házasságot, ezt követően Jopie az Egyesült Államokba költözött, ahol több mint egy évtizeden át részmunkaidőben pedagógusként dolgozott.
1987-ben a kaliforniai Berkeleyben működő Pacific School of Religion intézményben szerzett Master of Divinity (teológiai mester) fokozatot, majd az Unitárius Univerzalista Egyház lelkészévé szentelték. Lelkészként szolgált a kaliforniai Berkeleyben, valamint az Egyesült Királyságban London, Horsham, Worthing és Godalming unitárius gyülekezeteiben. Jopie és Richard 2019-ben költöztek vissza az Egyesült Államokba, hogy közelebb lehessenek családjukhoz.
Jopie-t vendégszeretetéről, éleslátó értelméről, együttérző bölcsességéről és arról ismerték, hogy bárhová ment, könnyedén kötött barátságokat.
Férjével, Richarddal évtizedeken keresztül meghatározó tagjai voltak a világ unitáriusait tömörítő International Council of Unitarians and Universalists (ICUU) szervezetnek, amelynek révén több alkalommal is ellátogattak Erdélybe, ahol tartós barátságokat ápoltak a magyar nyelvű unitárius közösséggel.
Gyászolják gyermekei, Elinore Boeke (Jeff Ludwig felesége) és Diana Boeke (Amir Abdelmalek felesége), unokái Zachary Ludwig, Juliana Ludwig és Alexander Ludwig, valamint sógornője, Ria Leoni Baarslag. Férje, Richard F. Boeke, valamint testvére, Theodoor Baarslag már korábban elhunytak.
Mivel maga is bevándorló volt, és bár élete nagy részét az Egyesült Államokban és Angliában töltötte, mindvégig megőrizte holland állampolgárságát, Jopie mélyen együtt érzett a bevándorlók sajátos kihívásaival és nehézségeivel. Hálával és nagyrabecsüléssel gondolt a Goodwin House munkatársaira is – akik közül sokan maguk is bevándorlók voltak –, akik odaadó gondoskodással vették körül őt és lakótársait életének utolsó éveiben.

Johanna “Jopie” Boeke (née Baarslag), 88, passed away on June 28, 2026.
She was born on November 15, 1937, in Assen, the Netherlands. She met her American husband of sixty years, the late Rev. Richard F. Boeke, at a conference in The Hague. They married in 1965, and Jopie moved to the United States, where she continued working part-time as an educator for more than a decade.
In 1987, she received her Master of Divinity degree from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California, and was ordained into the Unitarian Universalist ministry. She served congregations in Berkeley, California, as well as in London, Horsham, Worthing, and Godalming in the United Kingdom. In 2019, she and Richard returned to the United States to be closer to their family.
Jopie was known for her warm hospitality, discerning intellect, compassionate wisdom, and remarkable ability to make friends wherever she went.
Together with Richard, she was an active and devoted member of the International Council of Unitarians and Universalists (ICUU) for many decades. Through this international ministry, they visited Transylvania on several occasions and built lasting friendships with the Hungarian-speaking Unitarian community.
She is survived by her children, Elinore Boeke (Jeff Ludwig) and Diana Boeke (Amir Abdelmalek); her grandchildren, Zachary Ludwig, Juliana Ludwig, and Alexander Ludwig; and her sister-in-law, Ria Leoni Baarslag. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard F. Boeke, and her brother, Theodoor Baarslag.
As an immigrant herself who remained a Dutch citizen despite living most of her life in the United States and England, Jopie identified deeply with the unique struggles of immigrants. She was profoundly grateful to the staff of Goodwin House—many of whom were immigrants themselves—for the compassionate care they provided to her and to her neighbors during her final years.
